COST OF CHEESE CHANGE-OVER
with the Government's bonus of £20, which will probably be a long time before it is paid out by a hard-un Government.. In the meantime all this paytiig out (by the farfhers and not by the Dairy Coy or Government) is creating quite a bit ol boom in Whakatane business. Farmers have had to come to town hall a dozen times to see timber merchants, hardware dealers and so oru with resultant loss of their (the farmers) small change where refreshments are served. Of course even if the farmer (local) is £50 worse oft on Octotber 1> he is better off than the Russian farmer in the "Scorched Earth" territory. However, I think it is only right to let the non-farm-ers know that the new cheese sunpliers will not handle any of that extra 2d per lb until November 2lh at earliest.
Yours etc., HARDER UP.
Sir, —This changing over to cheese supply by a hundred or more suppliers on the Rangitaiki Plains Seems to be a better thing for Whakatane business people than for the farmers concerned-. The farmer find* his overdraft up by £50 or so by' having to build a milkstand at his gate (good for the timber trade), devise a means of hauling his: cans from the shed to the road (which means buying some vehicle), and then buying milk lift and cooler froih the various firms of dairy engineers. In return he is hoping to get in advance of l/4d per lb butterfat instead of l/2d for butter supply, although there appears toll ave been nothing said yet as to whether this will be a fact or jiist a hotpe. It will take a few month* under the milk supply payout before the supplier gets his £50 back, evei» (Continued in previous column)
