SEASON REVIEWED

RUGBY CONCLUDES

FINAL MEETING HELD

"The position looked bad at the outset to the extent that we were forced to postpone the commencement of the seasldn,'" said the president of the Whakatane Rugby Union (Mr W. S. Henderson) when reviewing the past season last night, "but we managed to continue under the difficult comdiltions and have no--

thing to regret."

Mr Henderson thanked delegates and clubs, for their excellent efforts while so handicapped and added that the standard of play had under the circumstances been excellent., Bad luck had been encountered in the Shield match, but over the season the representative side had done well losing only once.

"We had lost many players and it was remarkable that we 1 were able to *box on'" at all. What next year will bring we do not know, but let us hope the situation w r ill be such that we can again see all players on the field.

"There are always hard things said about Rugby—being a rough game and ■so on —but Ave turn out the best fighting men and not in small numbers either," commented Mr Henderson when referring to those prominent Rugby players who were now overseas.

CHALLENGE DECLINED

VISIT OF AIR FORCE RUGBY

TEAM

LOCAL SIDE UNAVAILABLE

The management committee of thei Whakatane Rugby Union reluctantly decided night to decline the challenge received from a R.N.Z.A.F. team from T'auranga which wished to visit the town on Saturday next to plaj r a match.

With the local competition concluded a month ago, and with farmers being increasingly .busy it was felt that it would be difficult and uncertain to field a team.
