RACING NOTES
FOR STEEPLECHASING
The Canterbury hurdler, Dividend, a winner over the battens at the Auckland Summer Meeting, is now being schooled over steeplechase jumps. He is the right type for the game, and in the general scarcity of cross country candidates should make good. THE LUCK OF THE GAME At Avondale Tc Kawiti was defeated a short head by the Beau Pere representative Amigo. He was improved somewhat by the gallop, but in the Makaraka Handicap at the Poverty Bay meeting a week later he went under to Erndale by two lengths. It will be generally considered that in respect to class Amigo would be just a few grades better than the Lapidary gelding, so T'c Kawiti's luck was apparently right out. It will be interesting to racegoers to sec what happens when the latter, pair meet again over a mile and a quarter. RETURNING TO N.Z. In Sydney a few days ago Kindergarten underwent the firing operation to his limb in which the tendon was affected. He is being brought back to Auckland, and will be treated to a lengthy spell. Others to return to these shores arc Duvach and Monte Gristo. THE G.N. GUINEAS Much interest is being taken in Auckland in respect to the chances in the Great Northern Guineas of Route March and Regal Fox. The latter Avas victorious in the New Lynn Handicap at the Avondale fixture, while Route March accountcd for the Flying Handicap and Avondale Guineas. He was" a top notch two year old, and has opened the season Avell at three years, whihi Regal Fox, a fine type of galloper, has yet to make a name for himself. FOR MITCHELSON CUP Rakanui, Avinner of the AA r ondale Cup, is executing satisfactory work at Ellerslie in his preparation for the Mitchclson Cup, one mile and a half, to be run next month. TWO DAYS' MEETING The South Canterbury Jockey Club has reverted to a tAvo days' meeting for May next. When it became knoA\ T n there AA T as a recommendation that one'day should be cut out several trainers from Southland and Otago pointed out that they AA r ould not make the trip for a one day fixture. As a meeting cannot be held Avitliout the horses, this aspect doubtless received the consideration of the committee. WELL CONNECTED One of the most recent bookings to Battle 1 Song is Callisto, sister to Gallio, half-sister to Te Hero, and a close to Ainmon Ra. She is OAA r ned by Mr M. Tims, aa'lio is sending the mare on the long trip from Auckland in order to secure 1 the services of the high-priced South Island sire. BEAU VI TE PLANS Beau Vite has been scratched from the Metropolitan Handicap. He Avill reappear at Aveight-for-age at Randwick next Saturday, and will be ridden by Darby Munro. DEATH OF W. F. ELLIOTT The Melbourne jockey, William Francis Elliott, has died from pneumonia at the- age of 33. He Avas associated with Pliar Lap in eight of the champion's Avins and headed the winning jockey's list for two seasons. BAD PICKING A story from the elergj'.* A minister. before delivering his sermon, had this to say: 'T regret to haA'e to rebuke some member of this congregation for having scribbled racing tips in the hymn books. Not only is it blasphemous and destructive, but I might add that Avhoe\ T er is doing it is not too Avell informed."
