OBITUARY
MRS ANGES STEWART
With the death of Mrs Agnes Stewart of Awakeri a link with tha pioneering days of Otago was severed. Born in Scotland 84 years the late Mrs Stewart oame to this > country in the year 1880, and married Mr A. Stewart at Kaikoura. For some years they managed a large run and cheerfully bore all the hardships which were the common lot of the early emigrants. Later as their family grew up they shifted into Christchurch where the children were educated. Forty-four years ago the family decided to move-north and selected the Taihape district as their new home. Mrs Stewart ex-
perienced the loss of her husband during this period and in 1916 when news came of her son, Colin's death in action she decide to break up her home and live with her only daugh-» ter Mrs A. L. Luke on the Rangitdiki. Since that date she has lived quietly at her adopted home making a host of friends and enjoying tho proximity of her grandchildren. She leaves two children, Mrs Luke (Awaken) and Mr Kenneth Stewart (Whakatane) . There are seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral \Vhich took plac^ l on Friday last was attended by many residents from the Plains and Wha-» katane. " :
VENERABLE MAORI RESIDENT
A well known native of Thornton for the past twenty years, Mr Johnson Davis, died recently at the estimated age of seventy years. A member of the Arawa tribe, the tang! held in his honour was held at Ro-
torua. In earlier days he flaxcutting contractor and supplied the old Thornton flax mill w]ien it was operating. Later he did casual work for farmers in the district and was favourably known as a haymaker. Of good education he also acted as interpreter for mixed Pakeha and Maori gatherings.
