RELIGIOUS PAPER'S VIEWS j j SLACKENING OF MORALS SEEN "The large numbers, of people who petition for divorce in New Zealand not only give our country an unenviable reputation but constitute a grave problem. They indicate that there is something vitally wrong with the morals of the community," says the Presbyterian newspaper, the "Outlook." "Moreover, if the success of family life is a necessity for the well-tbeing of the community, then the community is in grave danger. A civilisation which is based on family souidarity cannot last if that basis, is weak. It is here that Ave see evidence of that slackening of the moral fibre which should cause coincern to all men avlio care for their country'^ well-being. "In 1939 —the latest figures available to us—there were I'iH petitons for divorce, an increase of 5% per cent over the number l'or the previous year and an increase of 48 per cent over those of 1930. This is a serious state of affairs Avhich canned be A r iewed lightly. Christian citizens in particular must vieAV all these facts with alarm."
