"ON A FUSS"
THE EMPIRE FLYERS RECREATION IN CANADA Young men from all the Dominions and America work and play together in Canada under the Commonwealth air training plan. One ox them, until recently, was aviation editor of the Toronto Star. Describing his first impressions after joining the Royal Canadian Air Fonce, he said : "I fqund the manning pool as interesting as a world cruise, for it is a metropolitan city within a city, and we can get information on any part of the world without moving more than 100 yards from our double decker bunk. We chatter with Australians play baseball with Americans, eat with lads from South Africa, and listen to tales tol'd by others who drove ambulances during the Nazi invasion of France." No one can be a "wallflower" at
the manning pool, for no point on the earth's surface is far enough away to be neglected by Toronto hospitality. On the Y.M.C.A. canteen bulletin boards there are always notices such as :—"Wanted: Two boys from Brisbane, Australia, for dinner." "Five boys from Argentine are invited to tea." "Twenty-five boys wanted for a dance at such-and-such a school—good eats, nice girls, transportation there and back." THE MARINES TOLD IT TO THEM During a cruise in Chinese waters. Marines of the United States Navy found a boot polish which s/onc more than usual. They told their wives about it when they went home; and a demand thereupon set in which has more than doubled the number of tins shipped from Britain to America since the war. Tho makers are jiow working to 100 per cent capacit3 r , mainly to supply the fighting forces at home and users overseas. The British civilian himself has been rationed to one fourth of his peace-time polish.
