TASTE FOR POULTRY
FOWL RUNS RAIDED MAORIS SENT TO' GAOL In recent weeks the strong* desire for poultry by some residents of Taneatua has caused owners of fowl runs a great deal of ill content, those whose taste required that a bird grace the festive board not being at alii particular whose it was and how it was come by. Several reports reached the ears of Constable O. S. Rice with the result that on Thursday morning he brought before the Court two Maoris! charged with the theft of fowls. Before Messrs Moody and Hayward, /'s.P., George Walker, who was also faced with two charges of being illegally on premises, and Mioai Tihi gleaded guilty to the l charges and were sentenced to one month in the Whakatane Police gaol. In his prosecution Constable Rice asked the Bench to inflict a severe penalty, stating that the offence had become prevalent at both Taneatua and Ruatoki and was causing considerable concern. He added that others were committing similar offences and the detection of these was a difficult task. In imposing the sentence the Justices severely cautioned the two culprits, stated that it was their intention to inflict heavy penalties for such thefts.
