THE CHESHIRE CHEESE
DESTROYED BY FIRE
Many New Zeaianders who have visited London are familiar with the Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street, aiul will regret the destruction of its famous -chop room by fire. The cause of the fire; has not been revealed, but it was not due to enemy action. During the big raid on London m December last, an incendiary bomb fell on the roof of the building, but the tire was extinguished before any real damage had been done. The chop room was, an authentic part of Restoration London, and under its low ceiling many a toast had been drunk to the success of British arms. Most of ihe relics in the room were saved, and tlr< parrot was rescued alive. The Cheese lias always had a parrot. The most famous of them died about six years ago. He could give a perfect imitation of drawing a cork from a bottle, and during the Great War had a very pronounced opinion as to what ought to be done with the German Kaiser.
