40,000 MINERS GO BACK TO PITS The British Government has beer) forced to reverse its decision that no miners can be released from the forces in order to combat the serious coal situation. About 40,000 men will be withdrawn from the services, munition factories and transportation shortly and sent back to the coal face in a drive to guarantee l full supplies for industry and winter heating. The Minister for Labour, Mr BevIn, has issued "directions" applicable to 25,000 of 100,000 ex-miners registered last month. In addition, arrangements have been made for the return of 15,000 men, most of whom have volunteered to the facc by the week-end. The Daily Mail's industrial correspondent says # that since the outbreak of war 160,000 miners have left the pits. More than 60',000i ire in the forces, but it is possible to got only a small proportion back.
