LESS DAIRY COWS LOST
MILDNESS of the spring weather and the consequent improvement in the pastures has made for a definite lessening in the number of losses in the dairy herds this season. This decrease in herd mortality throughout the Bay of Plenty is welcome news to the farmers and is based mainly on the limited number of beasts sent to the rendering-down plants. It has however a far-reaching national effect, for apart from the individual losses to the farmer concerned, it is estimated that for every cow lost the general output suffers to the extent of at least two cwt. of butter, or four cwt. of cheese. In other words, every cow lost reduces the farmer's returns by something over £10. While dealing with the subject we have in mind the splendid veterinary service at the Rangitaiki Dairy Factory, which has probably also played a big part in reducing the stock losses in our district.
