SINKING OF MINE OFF OHOPE
RESIDENTS EXPERIENCE
Now that the tale of the successful sinking of the drifting mine off White Island last Wednesday has tome to hand there have been at feast two persons living at Ohope who 'declare that they saw a white (lash and heard a distant report on the day in question.. The mine which was first reported on August 31, was disposed of by the Gisbornf Sheepfarjners' motor vessel 'Margaret W' when it was sunk by rifle fire about 19 miles on" the seaward side of the island. It is possible that of the destruction of the mine might be heard at Ohope but the fact remains- that it would be about 56 miles from the shore.
