MEETING AT WHAKATANE
ENTERTAINING MAORI ITEMS
Mrs F. E. Berry presided over a fairly large attendance -of Institute members at the September meeting held in the Parish Hall on the 2nd t mst. Before the commencement of the meeting members stood at the request of the president to observe a silence as a mark of sympathy to Mesdamc-s Hultquist and Cairns in their recent bereavements. The meeting opened with the read ing of the Aspirations bv the president. A letter was received from Air Force relations thanking the Institute for its work which up to date showed a total of 18 pullovers, 23 balaclavas, 18 scarves and 3 pairs of gloves to the credit of Whakatane Institute knitters. A letter was also received from the local Red Cross secretary aclo nowledging the sum of £2 12s 6d for the Fighters' Mothers' Campaign, which amount had been raised at the August meeting of the Institute by the sale of "Mystery Parcels." An appeal for the Lepers avhs handed round amongst the members, to be further dealt with at the next meeting. Two new members were proposed *nd elected. Members were reminded of the forthcoming Council meeting to be held at Waimana on the 25 th inst. A Roll Call of Maori names -and '■heir meanings was well responded to, and a most interesting display of Maori curios was also exhibited.
Maori Entertainment
The Institute Glee Club opened the afternoon's entertainment with the popular Maori Battalion song.
The children of the Poroporo School were at their best in action songs, Avhich were grentlv appreciated, as was Mrs Tunui's song, avlio n!so received hearty applause for her rendering of "Home Sweet Home" (in Maori). Miss Paul gave a most interesting demonstration of taniko weaving, and Mrs Rangi's singing was also well applauded. An address prepared by Mr Albert Stc.wl- - was read by Mrs Rangi and proved most instructive. In proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, Mrs Berry made special reference to Mr anr] Mrs Goodwin who were responsible for training the children in their action songs. Th" wirmei's of competitions for the day Avere: Marmalade, Mrs biston 1, Mrs Lvsaght. 2. Besi Floavcr, Mrs BroAvn 1. Pikelets, Mrs Print 1, Mrs Stewart 2. It was dcckied to enter a display at the forthcoming Anglican FloAvef Show, Mrs Wheeler to take charge of the arrangements. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
