CANNED FISH POSITION

DEVELOPMENT IN CANNING

"With developments that are taking placc in the industry it is hoped that a substantial proportion of New fish requirements in canned fish will be available from local sources of supply," says the Associate Minister of National Service, the Hon. D. Wilson, in a statement made in response to inquiries. The statement has been issued on behalf of the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan.

Mr Wilson says imports of canned fish into New Zealand, which comprise mainly herrings, sardines and salmon, were valued at £219,000 for the year ended December ?A, 1938. Eventually these importations ceased altogether and the country is now faced with a shortage of this type of food.
