"Britain is likely to emerge from the AA r ar a debtor nation for the first time in her history. It is astounding' that the Avorld-wide implications of this, forecast, recently made by the President of the Board of Trade, haA r e received so little attention," the British Trade Commissioner (Sir Robert Dalton), told the Economic Society in Sydney. "Britain must close the gap by reducing imports, increasing exports. "We should not delude ourselves Avith easy assumptions that great industrial and economic progress anywhere can immediately, or even soon, fcIIOAV the close of this devastating Avar. "Consistent Avith full Avar effort, Britain is trying to maintain her export trade, asking sacrifices of her OA\ r n consumers. Empire countries have an interest in her success."
