TAURANGA LODGES PROTEST SATURDAY'S SHALFOOfNj SHIELD GAME Tauranga on Saturday was beaten for the Shalloon Shield, premier trophy for junior football, in the Bay of Plenty, by the challenger, Opotiki, by 10 points to six. Whether or not Opotiki will be fllloAved to retain the shield, however, is still, very much in doubt, Tauranga having lodged a protest with the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union against the action of Oipotild in allegedly playing a senior representative. The player referred to was a back, and he gave an outstanding display. He is alleged to have been a member of the Opotiki senior team which unsuccessfully defended the Hurinui Apanui Shield against Tauranga at Opotiki recently, and it is stated that before the start of the game on Saturday the attention of the manager of the Opotiki team was drawn to the fact that a senior player was included in his side, by nn official of the Tauranga Rugby Sub-Union. The protest will be considered by the Bay of Plenty Union at its next meeting.
