MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS

COUNTY AND BOROUGH INVESTIGATIONS

SITE TO BE SELECTED

Committees representing the Borough and County Councils have met to disquss matters relating to the installation of a municipal abattoirs. The Borough committee comprised the dteputy-Mayor, Mr Si. S. Shatpley and! Crs W. Sullivan, C. S. Armstrong and Mr D. V. Sautiders (town clerk). Messrs W. A. Mc-. Cracken (chair), J. L. Buruett, F. J. Burt, D. W. Spence, T. G« H. Cawte and H. C. McCready were members! of |the County Finance Committee present.

The deputy-Mayor apologised for the ahsence of His Worship the Mayor and for the borough suggested that Taneatua, Etfgecumbe, and Matata townships might be inclmV'fljin t^ e abattoir area. There Avas also Waimana, but whether it would be advisable to include this township in the scheme, the speaker was unable to say.

Gr Sullivan spoke in support and that to 'ensure that the Government Inspector would pass thfc meat, it was the council's present intention to 'appoint a Mianager-In--spector. The advantage of the abat- . toir was that consumers, so far as was possible, were assured of receiving meat which was certified.

Gr McCracken stated that it appeared that the area to comprise the abattoir district could be more easily decided when the meeting ltnew where it was proposed to locate the abattoir buildings.

The deputy-Mayor stated that the site on which the abattoir buildings would be located had not 3 r et been decided bv the council.

It was resolved that a committee ■comprising the Borough and County representatives recommend to their respective councils a site for the location of the abattoir buildings and also submit a recommendation as to the portion of the county which should be included in the abattoir district and that a combined committee meet at the Avvakeri Store at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, Gth September, and that the committee report back.
