RED CROSS CAMPAIGN

WORK BY COMMERCIAL

TRAVELLERS

APPEARANCE OF BOYS' BAND

The Red Cross campaign advanced another step at the week-end and the funds mounted greatly as the result of the efforts of a band of commercial travellers who visited the town from Auckland to conduct a "quick raffle" programme. Appearing in the Strand with a motor lorry as a platform the visitors soon had the people interested and were disposing rapidly of the excellent prizes offered. Their businesslike, speedy methods and ever ready wit kept the crowd well entertained and in spending mood.

Those responsible for the effort were Messrs N. McLeod (Brookbanks), Dave MacNicol (Abbot, Armstrong and Howie), V. Elliott (Hutchinson's Wholesale), G. McClaren (A. H. Nathan), Frank Gaffaney (J. York and Co) al'l; of Auckland, and Reeve Canning of Whakatane. Mr E'. Janee, of Messrs D. McL. Wallace Ltd./ operated the loud speaker system. Special thanks weer also due to Mr Horace Bull (president of the Auckland Commercial Travellers Club), Mr Senn (managing director of Butterworths Ltd), Messrs Brabant Bros, Mrs Young (Regent Milk Barf), Mr Chittenden (manager of the Regent Theatre), and Mr Colin Mollison, of Miessrs Bridgers Ltd.

Commencing on Friday afternoon the effort continued until Saturday at midday and was assisted by the Whakatane Boys' Band which from time to time rendered selections in the Strand. The appearance of the boys and their selections under the baton of Mr W. Jarrett were greatly appreciated by residents.

Saturday Night Dance '

The King Street Hall attracted a large crowd on Saturday night and to music supplied by the Opotiki orchestra dancing was enjoyed. As usual the ladies had all arrangements well in hand and the function further added to the funds of the Red Cross.

Auction Postponed

It was intended to hold an auction sale at Mr A. J. Canning's mart on Saturday morning, but this was postponed until next Saturday.
