OPOTIKI OFFICER ALSO HURT

As a result of a collision be- ' tween a car and' a truck which • occurred at about 5.50 p.m. cto Saturday Captain H. Whitbread 1 , A.D.C. to Sir Guy Williams lies unconscious in the Whakatane Hospital. The condition of Lieut Gilbert Murray, of Opotiki, who was driving the car is reported to be good. Thei truckl driver, Mr R. J. Mercer, of Edgecnmbe, was unhurt.

It appears that the car in which the two - officers were travelling, a Ford coupe, was endeavouring to past the car ahead, in Avhich rode Sir Guy Williams, Brigadier C. A. West, Major Daws, area officer for the Military District, and "Stephenson, when it collided with the truck driven by! Mr Mercer. Sir Guy and his party were proceeding to Opotiki in the course of a tour of the Bay .

The Whakatane St. John Ambulance was promptly) on the scene and the injured officers were conveyed to the local hospital. Captain Whitbread is suffering from severe concussion, Lieut. Murray sustained shock, cuts and abrasions, while Mr Mercer, who was thrown from the driving seat of his truck, escaped with a severe shaking.
