RACING NOTES
CHANGE OF LOCATION
Arrangements are being made for the Avondale September meeting to be held at Ellerslie, consequent upon the suburban course property still being vised as a military camp.
IMPROVING
One of the improving track workers at Ellerslie is Gamos, of the Nicliolson-Davis team. It will be remembered that among other good races the Muskctoon representative won a Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha, and when lie strikes similar form he will keep the opposition
very busy.
WELL WORTH WINNING
The prize money for the next Auckland Cup will be £3500 with a gold cup valued at £100. Owners of the second and third horses will receive £700 and £300 respectively from the stakes. Once again competition will be very keen, and among the competitors may] be several of the New Zealand horses thai will have been racing in Australia daring the spring campaign. SHORTAGE OF LABOUR Owing to the difficulty of securing boys for track riding, the Takanini trainer, J. H. Wallace, has had to send back to their owners Nordic Song, Lornacre and Biddy Girl. The first mentioned pair will this week join a Pukokohe trained team, while Biddy Girl will enter J. Cheholm's stable at Ellerslie. PATRIOTIC FUNDS BENEFIT Patriotic funds will benefit to the extent of £3047 19s, as the result of the Auckland Racing Club donating its net profit for the past season for patriotic purposes. J ; ust now nr. one is contending that racing is not doing its part in helping the finances of the country in time of stress. A WELL-BRED HURDLER Haile Selassie, winner of the Riverbank Hurdles at the Manawatu meeting, is by Grand Knight from Summer Time, by Grand Court from imported Very Hot, by Grosvenor. He is a half-brotlier to the winners Cricket, Greenwich, Rotorua and Sun Belle.
NELSON CENTENNIAL
ISiext February the Nelson, province will eelebrate its centennary. The Nelson Jockey Club, one of the firs' formed in New Zealand will holt! Its annual meeting on the 16 and IS of that month. LIKES HEAVY GOING Calula Boy is thriving on the tasks allotted him and will strip in great condition for the Pakurangn meeting. There are few better gallopers in heavy going than Calula Boy, and F. Gilchrist appears likely to win more money with the son of Autopay before the ground becomes hard again. TO BE RE COMMISSIONED That consistent performer Softly ts to be recommissioned by W. Fergus during the next week or two.The daughter of Iliad is now four years old and it will be interesting to see how she performs at the advanced age. Last season Softly earned £895 and rarely ran a bad race, Vrhile she finished up by proving capable of winning in open sprinl company. Though a shade on the Small side Softly is a very genuine filly, and her gameness in a hard finish has enabled her to get the Judge's verdict in several of her contests.
