RESISTED ARREST

GAOL FOR MAORI

SERIOUS OFFENCE

Too much waipiro plus an aggressive nature have led Tame Wahapongo Kingi, aged 22, to the Whakatane Police gaol where he will have one month to reflect on the error he made when he* thought he was a match for a Constable. He appeared at the local court on Monday before Messrs R. W. Schoficld and L. R. Brown, Js'P.

Shortly after six o'clock on Saturday evening the offender was noticed by Constable G. Urquhart to be under the influence, and he was tokl to "pull himself together" and depart. Unwisely Kingi did not, and was again seen near a billiards saloon amongst a crowd of his fellows and was adopting fighting attitude. Constable Urquhart found him quiet when he asked him to "com. l ? along," but this did not last for long and Kingi, becoming aggressive, had to be thrown and. handcuffed. His attack which would not have found favour with the Marquis of Queensbury continued until he was in the cell.

Sergeant M. Farrell asked for support from the Bench in putting a stop to such behaviour, the resisting

of arrest becoming a common practice amongst the natives. The Bench in pointing out to the offender that lie was eligible for a three month's sentence but on this occasion he would be let off with one month.
