HEAVY RAINFALL
LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED
S I'll A N G E. C O-I NCI DE N CE,
Commencing shortly after nine o'clock on Monday morning and continuing steadily until shortly before 5 p.m. heavy rain fell in Whakatane on Friday to register 2.12 inches on Mr H. Muscutt's guage. Although a few sfmall slips occurred on county roads no major damage has been
reported
It is a strange co-incidence th:it on the same clay of last year, August 8, exactly the same amount, 2.12 inchcs of rain fell. The recording for this month so far is 2.56 inches of rain, during the same period in 1940 the amount being 2.40 inches. Rainfall this year has been greater than for the corresponding period last year, the total to date being 33.62 inches as against 24.41 inches.
Heavy Seas
With a strong blow the seas running were heavy and attracted a number of people to the Heads where the spume Avas flung many feet high. The new sea wall built ai Centennial Park received a severe test and withstood the battering it
received
Farm Lands Inundated,
The heavy rains were responsible for overtaxing the drainage system in lands in the low-lying areas; and yesterday several feet of water remained on some properties but will probably clear later to-day. As yet this winter a severe flood has not been experienced, but nevertheless the farms near the river have been partially submerged when heavy falls have occurred.
A later report from Mr Muscutt states that since .93 inches of rain have fallen bringing the total for the month to 34.55 and the week-end fall from Friday to 3.49.
VIOLENT ELECTRICAL STORM
EXPERIENCE AT EDGECUMBE
Edgecumbe on Saturday night experienced the most violent electrical storm that has occurred for some years, heavy peals of thunder and brilliant lightning occurring at about 11 p.m. This was accompanied by a downpour of rain. No damage is reported.
O'n Friday the rainfall, recorded bjr Mr Andrew McLean was 1.77 inches while on Saturday, chiefly during the storm 1.13 inches fell.
