RACING NOTES
GRAND NATIONAL MEETING SATISFACTORY ACCEPTANCES Despite the fact 'that several of the leading entrants for the Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase have had to be withdrawn owing to the exigencies of training and racing the acceptances for the three principal events of the meeting may be deemed satisfactory. Those for the G.N. Steeples number thirteen, and include several of the best jumpers in the Dominion, although they may not be up to the standard of past years. The top weight, Slayer, 11.6' ran second last year to Clarion Call, and now lias S lbs more to carry, while Ballybrii is a consistent performer in the south. ErinatLon 10.9 may be a long way below his form of say three seasons ago, but Bridegroom, 10.8 now ranks as one of the best in commission, his second to Streamline in the Great Northern Steeples proving this. Whirr, 9.13 won the Otago and Dunedin Steeples this winter and Chat, 9.12, is best remembered by her victory in the 1940 Wellington Steeplechase. This week's favourite division will probably include Bridegroom, Slayer and Whirr. The Winter Cup, one mile, has drawn an acceptance of 37, and ihej entrants include quite a number of very brilliant milers. Royal Lancer, 9.13, has been a big wanner in the south this season, and other winners of note are Gladynev, Noble Fox, Augment, Autolite, Sunny Knight, Black Majesty and Treasurer. A trio popular with the public just now are Gladynev, Sunny Knight and Gayest Son. The Grand National Hurdles will be run on the second day. The acceptors number seventeen, and are headed with Erination 10.9. Rcccnt winners engaged in the two and a half miles and 60 yards: are King Rcj r , Foxiana, Esperance Bay, Dividend, The Dozer and Mungaloon.
RETIRED
The Winning Hit representative. Trench Fight, winner of numerous races, principally in the South Island has been definitely retired from the turf. A LONG SPELL The Surveyor gelding, Sacconc. who went wrong while contesting the Great Northern Hurdles on June 3, has been blistered for tendon trouble, and turned out on a Waikato property for an extended spell from course activities. AN EXTRA MEETING After many years the Te Aroha Jockey Club has been successful in arranging for an extra two days meeting each year, and has been aillotted September 20 and 22 for a spring fixture. This has been made 1 possible by an arrangement between the club and the Poverty Bay Turf Cljub, and in affect this means that Poverty Bay Avill have two days less racing each seaspn, and Te Aroha two more. OF A HIGH STANDARD Burma, winner of the Okawa Maiden at the Hawke's Bay meeting has the distinction of being a grand daughter of Desert Gold. She is by Bulandsliar from Sahara by Grande court from Desert Gold, who stake money now totalled £23,133. HIGHLY BRED At the 1940 National Sales Mr B. McKniglit, of Wellington, purchased a chestnut yearling filly by Night from the Day Comet mare Day Dress, which is to race in the name of Wedding Dress. Friday Night is a full brother to the famous Phar Lap, and it is interesting to learn that the filly, while not so big as her illustrious relative, isi of the same colour and has very similar markings.
