AMERICAN IDEAL
FINGERPRINTS FOR ALL VALUE IN COMMERCE A day may come when we shall all have our fingerprints on our identity cards, and it seems to be coming nearer in the United States. There the fingerprints of aliens arc being registered, and now those of all radio operators- arc to be taken so that if any unauthorised person tampers with a wireless transmitter the fact can 1)? ascertained from the fingerprints left on t,l;e keys. Other uses for fingerprints have been found for Savings Bank accounts. The Savings Books have the fingerprints of the owners and that of the official of the office where it was issued. In these prints, only those of three fingers arc taken, and to avoid the
smudginess of ink, arc transferred to the book after the fingers have been dipped into a grey chemical paste. One other special fingerprint is that of an official in the U.S. Pass-; port Department, who seals with his own finger the passports for Americans in Europe. There is also talk of introducing fingerprints into schools.
