"SACRIFICE"
A SOLDIERIS POEM AFTER THE CRETAN CAMPAIGN We have been handed the following poem written by Trooper H. Horridge of the NIZ. Divisional* Cav. airy, and sent by his mate Tpr. J. R. Waddell to his relations in Whakatane. The verses speak in simple language of the manner in which ilic average soldier has come to regard the Cretan Campaign, by one who had actually been through it. Vet night so dark nor rising sun Will ever dim, the glory That the boys on Crete have won. No laurel wreaths —no bands to play (n honour —for it's there they lay Beneath the Olive trees s'o green, So Peaceful, —Calm, —the price supreme. fhey fough't 'gainst odds that naught could stand, These heroes in that 'other land,' N T c. thought of self, or vented spleen, The finest bunch of lads This world has ever seen. Their memory will always live, Their fame will shine on high, They were my pals, my 'buddies,' It is hard to say "good-bye." God made them great, to do his will And prouder, greater tasks fulfilThey lived and died, they paid the price, A 'glorious,' living, sacrifice.
