Mr F. W. Doidge was present at the meeting of the Otakiri brancli of the National Party held on Monday night. Mr and Mrs J. Davison, of Thornton, visited Auckland during the week-end to bring home their eldest son, Eddie, who has been invalided out of the Army as a result of contracting rheumatic fever while iw Papakura camp. Eddie spent nearly three mon'ths in hospital and has now a long period of convaltescence before him. As the first member of the House of Representatives to serve with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Mr A. F. Moncur, who has represented the Rotorua electorate for the past six years, was the gues>t at a faj-erf Well social and dance in the Concert Chamber on Saturday evening. Mr Moncur is at present training as a member of an aerodrome construe tion unit. The death occurred at Whakatane on July 19, 1941, of Miss Molly Phyllic Ranby, daughter of the late Mr R. B. Ranby, at the age of 41 years. Born at Colyton. Wellington, tha late Miss Ranby spent most of her life in Canada returning to New Zealand three years' ago. Thornton-Matata Road district died recently in the person of Mr Alric Skoglund Petersien, who lived a soli-* fary life in a hut on the roadsiHe. He was a pensioner and also grew annualily a patch of maize and kept some poultry. He was greatly es* *eemecl by the settlers of the district for whom he did. harvesting and other seasonal work. He was buried in the Whakatane cemetery a number of settlers of the Thorn--ton and Matata districts paying their last respects at the graveside.
