RACING NOTES

OLD BILL RETURNS ) The Wellington Cup winner, 0!d Bill, has returned to work at Awapuni and is now being prepared for the big Spring Handicaps. Rising six, Old Bill should retain his form as he has thrown off the soreness which was recurrent after his eflort in the Auckland Cup. RETIRED Monte Cristo's elder sister Paxeno owned by Mr G. Gardiner of ,Tc Aroha has been turned out owing lo leg trouble, and in the coming seaSon will be relegated to the stud matron's paddock. The rising two year old filly by; Baffles! from Royal Secret also owned by Mr Gardiner has been sent to R. Martin at Matamata to prepare for early two year c>id events. I I GOOD SPRINTER Calula Boy failed to begin as well as usual in the Visitors' Handicap during the Northern fixture, but he finished gamely to be beateri by only a head by Circular Note. A sprint in the early spring is sure to come his, way as he is training on *plendicTly. AT THE STUD The racing career of Royal Chic I oame to an end with the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton last blaster, and he has been leased to the Pembroke studmaster, Mr J. Faulks. He will commence his stud life tliisr spring. Royal Chief haa much to recommend him for the stud as apart from his high breeding nnd good looks he was one of the best of the Dominion's performers tn recent years. WORTH REMEMBERING Hot Shot has been having an easy time since he returned from the Manawatu meeting. The spell is sure to do the Lackham gelding good and he is likely to be an improved hurdler next term. Hot Shot won over hurdles at Eilerslie and was in the money twice at Manawatu, so there is every prospect that he will develop into a payable proposition over the battens in the new season; TO VISIT MEDIEVAL KNIGIIT The owner of Ivy Willonyx has dccided to retire tho bay marc from racing and she will in future do duty as a stud matron. Arrangements have been mafic, for Ivy Willonyx to be mated with the recently imported sire, Medieval Knight, who sired several Avinners during his short term at the stud in Australia,

TRAINING ON WELL A. Kemp is keeping British Talent In active work, and no fault can be found with the condition of the chestnut gelding. This galloper is due to comoete at the Pakuranga meeting, and as the. going is invariably soft when that fixture takes place, he WilKi be racing under favourable conditions. As British Talent has won up to a mile and a quarter there will be plenty' of races to suit him during' the spring meetings. NEW RECRUIT TO JUMPING One of the latest recruits to the jumping brigade at EWerslie is Orate, who is, showing ability for a beginner. This gelding was one of our best sprinters a couple of seasons ago, and once he gains; experience in the new department sfco 6hould be capable of paying hi'i way. Corato, in the same stable, is getting ready slowly for the spring meetings. DECREASING FIELDS, # Prospects for the Grand National meeting at Riccarton are certainly not as bright as they,, were' at the beginning of the month, for since then mishaps and injuries to Streamline, Arctic Dawn, Limbohm, Gold Spot and Birkology have necessitated the withdrawal from their <;n r gagemcnts. The fields for the principal jumping events will consequently be considerably weaker than in recent years. IN RECESS The Kurow Jockey Club. Onmaru, has decided to go into recess for the period of the war. This is a partial curtailment of racing brought about.
