NO PAY
NEED FOR ENQUIRY - ALLEGATIONS REGARDING MAIZE PLUGKERS Criticism of the payment con- , '■ ditions for maiize pluckers is the „ subject of an anonymous 1 letter ' written to an Eastern Bay of; '. newspaper, it being sug-t ;. gested that the conditions pre- ' Vailing in the Whakatane dis- " trict should be the subject of an • enquiry by some union secretary. The letter reads as follows: — "Recently an outcry arose from Whakatane predicting a serious loss of the maize crop, if labour .oulil not be immediately obtained foi plucking. As a result Maori labour ■was practicably conscripted on the Coart"" and the men —good workers —takerif#ver to Whakatane by c'ar >and bus. They are away from their , homes, and have to live, but so far I after over three weeks' work, no pay is forthcoming. Tlieyi worked from } daylight to dark, arid the highest day's earnings so far is 7s. It ;vouli\ ■ appear that here is a case for en. quiry by our ,Labour Government. Perhaps some union secretary would interest himself in the welfare of these men, who appear to be receiv ; ing very 1 harsh treatment.
