FAILURE TO ENROL
EMPLOYEE FINED ! SERIOUS OFFENCE At the Opotiki Court last week M. B. Albbot faced a charge arising out of the failuro of a single man in his employ to enrol on the national register. The Police explained to the court that in November, 1939, a jockey commenced to work for defendant and was employed until August, 1941. He was a single man and made no attempt to register. The defence claimed that defendant understood that Ferguson was registered. However, at a race meeting Ferguson was boasting about not being registered, and when this got back to Mr Abbot, he dismissed the man immediately. Defendant was a returned soldier and this was the thing he wanted. The magistrate siaid that the law regarded the offence as a serious one. A fine of £5 was imposed. The employee, Ferguson was previously dealt with in the Rotorua Court.
