RED CROSS WORK
CAMPAIGN FOR FUNDS PROGRAMME FOR BOROUGH AND COUNTY ; Members of the Red Cross So- - ciety in the Whakatane decided 1 to open a cam- ; paign for funds, which will be used to further the Red Cross work in the Dominion and the Empire for the well-being of the Allied services. This campaign ' opens to-day and will continue for two months to culminate with the holding of a Red Cross Ball. A system of campaigning something similar to the Fighters' Mother - Appeal recently held in Auckland, is to be adopted on this occasion for •campaigners having been selected to take the lead in the Borough and Taneatua. Representing the Tanedistrict will be Mrs J. Moody, 3 Whakatane ladies have been these being Mrs S. *H. " Tippett, Mrs T. W. James and Mrs H. Stubbs, the last named being the nominee of the vsW.W.S.A. It was Uhe first Intention, that Edgecumbe., Matata, Te Teko and Awakeri also have a representative, but these districts have decided against and will be making their efforts other ways. As will no doubt be noted the leaders of the campaign selected an? mothers, who have sons overseas, and "Who have taken a keen and valuable interest in the work of th e Red ' Orossi since tha outbreak of the pre-' sent conflict. There is no doubt that • an interesting and keen competition will result between tliei districts represented. The Whakatane Borough and •County Campaign as it. has been named will during the next two months organise a diversified programme of events which, in providing the public with attractive entertainment, will, it is hoped, attract strong support and thus as a result be responsible for a worthy sum being raised to assist the organisation. The Red Cross throughout the Dominion has a policy which is to, in efforts to raise funds, not appeal directly to the, public for funds, but "to raise money by giving goods or entertainment in return. This policy is an admirable one to be adopted by an organisation so worthy of the support of everyone and srpeaks highly for the good citizenship and patriotism of the members, who. not as strong in numbers as could be desired, therefore must make greater on their own energies and resources to further the interests ot their cause.
