PAGEANT OF EMPIRE
Presbyterian church event EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT A very successful function took place in the King Street Hall on Monday evening last when the Presbyterian Bible Classes and friends presented a Pageant of Empire, and other items, in aid of Mission funds; The hall was crowded to capacity and. the reception of the entire performance was most enthusiastic. The Rev. H. Hogg was master of cere" monies, and Miss Hobin officiated at the piano. The programme included, in the Orsi half, a pretty set of Nursery Rhymes by the Junior Sunday School children; a play of the Victorian Era, entitled "Two Rooms to Let," talentedly portrayed by Mrs R. Hill, Misses Graham, Henry and Hendeis son: a skipping dance by Miss Isobel Martin and a character sketch by Miss Jean Armstrong. The second half cf the prograinma was devoted entirely to the presentation of Hie Pageant of Empire. Miss Alison Hogg_ taking the part or 'Brittania' and Mr G. Kerr that of 'John Bull.' The items included :— England—Sailor's Hornpipe: MisS - Isobe] Miartin. Solo "Wings Over thp Navy," Master Geo. Paterson Folk Dance. Scotland —Solo "Road to the Isles" Mr D. Paterson. Highland Fling: Misses J. Howat and N. Watson. I red and—lrish Jig: Miss Ruby Howat. Solo "Did Your Mother Come From Ireland": Miss B. Brcckon. Wales —Solo "Land of my Father?" Dr. Cole. Canada—Quartette "The Maple Leaf" Misses Pi. and G. Gar a way, Meisdames Cutler and Waddell. Newfoundland —Trio "Jingle Bells** Misses J. Armstrong, L. Garaway and M. Kirk. India —Solo "The Salaam Song" Mrs K. Schofield. South Africa —Zulu War Dance: Messrs, J. Jones and A. Stewart. Recitation "The Veldt" Mjiss D. Henderson . ' Palestine—Solo "The Holy City" Miss C. Schofield. Australia—Recitation, Miss L. Schofield. Pacific Islands—Solo "Aloha Oe" Miss Stewart. New Zealand — Quartette, Poi Dance "Maori Battalion Song" by Misses M., J., K., and Master J. Laughton. Solo "There'll Always Be an England" Mr C. Kerr. Uncle Sam, Mr S. Yeoman. Special mention must be made of the singing of the various choruses by the combined performers, which was thought by many to be equal t» that of any town choir. A tribute to the splendid quality of the whole entertainment was paid, when a repeat performance was asked for at an early date, for the benefit of the British Red Cross This is to■ take place in 'the King Street Hall on Monday, the '28th inst.
