RACING NOTES

RIDER FOR BIRKOLOGY M. Ritchie who isi to ride Birkology in the Grand National Steeplechase, is at present in a military camp, but has been granted leave of absence to take part in the great sporting event of the season. If lie scores a win he will be loudly cheered by his camp mates. HISTORY REPEATED In abandoning its winter meeting this year the Wellington Racing Club rcpeiated history for in 1915, when the Great War Avas raging, sickness in camp at the T'rentham course prevented the fixture being held. Some daj r it will be realised by the military authorities that Trentham is by no means a beau ideal place for a winter camp. NON-TOT ALISATOR MEETING The date for the non-totalisator tneeting at Matamata has been fixed for July 19. On account of the cancellation of the Wellington meeting it is expected the number of entries for Miatamata will be larger than usual. The programme caters tor flat events, a steeplechase and two trots. LEADING TRAINERS & JOCKEYS The season's leadifig trainer of the Dominion is T. R. George, of Trentham, with 51 winners. H. Dulieu ranks as runner-up with 34. George has now had the distinction of being top of the lisit for seven consecutive years. In the ranks of jockey W. J. Broughton is again at the top, for the fourth time with 78 wins, Wiggins being next with ill. B. H. Morris and L. J. Ellis running a dead heat for third with 45.

DIFFERENCES OF OPINION In Australia there are wide differences, of opinion in regard to the' qualification of Murmuring, by Bulandshar—Tea Tattle' who wa>; purchased by Mr John Wren, of Sydney, at the Ney Zealand National Sales: for thei top price of 2000gns. Several *turf writers claim that, in time he will turn out a champion Ivhile a leading rider avers "he is not worth two bob." AUCKLAND ENTRANTS The Auckland owner horses nom* inated for the Grand National Steep: lechase are Dauber, Baldric and Lucidus, and those for the G.'NT. Hurdles King Rey, Golcl Spot, Erlic'? and Wharemanea. It would appea? that this province is not at all strong in the possession of high-rank jumpers. A COME BACK T. Green, for some years acknowledged to be one of the best horsemen in the Dominion, but who. has been out. of the saddle for nearly two seasons, has resumed track wori: riding, at Ellerslie. Pie has applied for a jockey's licence, and will ride next season for the H. Eva stable. SPELLING The Foxbridge gelding, Ever England, who opened his racing career this season by winning at Trentham and Awapuni but who bled in his last start at Ellerslie has been given a lengthy spell at Te Awamutu. GAR VAALS AT TE RAPA The Morrinsville jumper, Gar Vaals, has just been taken in hand at Te Rapa by A. Gilmer. He i? likely to improve now that lie will be well schooled over the standard steeplechase obstacles, and will not be likely to fall in his. contests. A SMART JUVENILE . At Matamata the filly Joy, by Foxbridge—Night Spi, is developing in a highly satisfactory manner, and will be raced by Mr A. E. Bowler, a part-owner of the successful Babrow. STABLE ACCESSIONS A recent addition to J. F. Tutchen's team at Te Rapa is a rising two year old filly by Dink liom Royal March. This trainer has just taken in hand the jumper Stanstead, by Spear Dance. He was a good performer in the 1938-39 season, when he won four races of the value of £113.-/ in prize money. In Tutchen's hands he is likely to "comei again.'" A PROPERTY PURCHASED Evidently Mr Frank Ormond, the well known Hawke's Bay sportsman is in no way troubled about any cessation of racing in this country. Last week he effected the purchase of 11. Neagle's Greenmeadows property, which is to be occupied by trainer B. H. Morris.
