TWO PIPE BANDS

Sir, —The. BEACON has done its duty nobly by warning its readers that there is a danger of tw(j bands being let loose at the forth- ' coming Whakatan© gymkhana that is to be run by our local Horse Guards. Two pipe bands! Take warning, all ye Sas'senacks, and provide yourselves with earplugs or some, miles of distance as a protect tion against the confused medleyf of sounds which indicates the prev ence of a pipe band. Granted that the bagpipes havewdorje good work in past ages as of offence and defence. Here is a rhyme that dates back to the 1914-18 war :— At a place which the Tommies called "Wipers," The British were troubled with snipers, But they fled from the spot, From the music—Mein Gott! Of the Argyle and Sutherland pipers. That may have been excusable when our soldiers were hard pressed on the Western Front, but why is the peace of the Whakatane Show-> grounds to be devastated by two pipe bands ? No bonder I am APPREHENSIVE NON-SCOT.
