Mid-winter Sunshine. Recent frosty mornings followed by sunny days and blue skies have given people, especially outdoor workers full scope for summing up the good and bad points of having the clock half-an-hour ahe&d of standard time all the year round. Those who are busy before sunrise complain about having to get to work half an hour too early, but there seems 100 per cent agreement that it is good to see the sun at 5 o'clock and enjoy an extra half-hour of daylight. Cows for Cheese Supply. Farmers in the portion of the Raugitaiki Plains nearest to Whakatane bave been canvassed during the past few days to ascertain exactly haw many cows will be milked by theprospective suppliers of the new cheese factory to be opened near the Paper Mills. This "cow census" is necessary so that an estimate can be made of the quantity of* milk which will have to be turned into cheeset daily at the factory. The building can then be equipped with machinery sufficient to handle the milk, and cheese. It is stated, that milk .v fll be collected for this factory •om as far away as the townshitt >f.
