CAULFIELD CUP KINDERGARTEN IS HANDIGAPPERS' TIP Commenting on the weights for the principal events at the spring meetings, the Sydney Telegraph says:— The champion New Zealand three year old Kindergarten is the weight tip for the Caulfield Gup. Beau Yite is asked to concede Kindergarten 101b in the Caulfield Gup, as against lib in the Metropolitan Handicap, and 31b in the Melbourne Cup. The V.A.T.G. handicapper, Mr C. Hill, alsio differed notably from the A.J.C. handicapper, Mr F. Wilson, in his treatment of another New Zealander, Belle Cane. This marc* is regarded by Mr Wilson as the equal of Session with 8.7 in the Ep> som Handicap, and 8.5 in the Metropolitan Handicap. - For the Caul< field Cup, however, Belle Cane is weighed 161b below Session. None of the rising three year old 9 have been placed above* the weigh t-for-age mark in , either of the cups, Yaralla and Highroad, rated as the best in this group, have each 7.6 in the Melbourne Gup.

SALE OF ERINATION WON GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES IN '38 The sale is announced of Erination, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles in 1938, to Mr A. Symes, a Christchurch sportsman, who Avon the Grand National Steeplechase with Royal Limond in 1936. Nα doubt Mr Symes has hopes of finding in Erination another National winner, as, judged on his perform-, ances during the past 18 months, the old Illumination gelding is Avell on the down grade as a hurdler. Erination was an outstanding per former both over hurdles and crosscountry in 1938, and he subsequently dis/tinguished himself as a great weight-carrier over the light fences, winning with as much as 13.0 in the saddle. At Ellcrslie, on June G, 1938, when he was held on lease by Mr J. H,. Greenhead from Mrs A. Loomb, .©f Tc Awamulu, he defeated Huskie and Jolly Beggar in the Great Northern Hurdles, and a month later he led tha field home in the Well ington Steeplechase. Taken to Christchurch, he balked in the big cross-country event at Riccarton, but, on the concluding day of tho meeting, he made remc amends, by winning the Lincoln Steeples. In October, 1930, Erination carried 12.10 to victory in the Manu-. kau Hurdles, but by the time his next—and last—success came along, in January of this year, he had dropped in the weights to 11.7. He was handicapped 10.9 in the recent Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie, run on June 2, and he fell at the fifth fence.

RIOTOUS RETIRED WON £5000 IN STAKES A popular figure on the turf over a long period of the: veteran steeplechaser Riotous ran his last race at Awapuni recently, the decision having been madei by Ls. Knapp, his owner-'trainer, to retire him. He well deserves the goo»i home prespared for him. Riotous had an eventful career, one that falls to the lot of few horses. Now 12 years old, he was got by Birkdale from Gross Word, by All Blaclc. He has alwaj's raced in the interests of his trainer and began racing at three years. He won at his first start over hurdles at Woodville as a four year old. His best season was in 1933-34, when he won eight jumping events, including the Mangere, E'gmont, Wanganui and July Steeplechases, and was placed on seven other occasions, winning £1295 in 18 starts. During his career he won close on £5000 in stakes, and his victories included the Wanganui Steeplechase (three times), Egmon! Steeplechase (twice), T'e Rapn Steeplechase and June Steeplechase (Hawkc's Bay) . He was also a winner over hurdles and on the flat. !
