CHARGE OF ASSAULT
NATIVE SENT TO GAOL YOUTH KNOCKED DOWN A sentence of one month's imprisonment in the Whakatane gaol was imposed by Messrs G. A. Brabant nnd L. R. Brown, J's.P., at the local court on Monday morning when Rene Uatuku appeared on a charge of assaulting a local youth. The offender pleaded guilty. Sergeant M. Farrcll stated that a young man had! taken some parcels for his firm to the' bus stand and awaiting the driver had sat on a box. Uatuku had approached in an intoxicated condition and also sat on the box and commenccd handling the youth, who moved away. This action appeared to offend the native ' '1 followed the young man an' 1 struck him, knocking him down and stunning him. He pursued the atlack but the young man moved away and the intervention of other people 'i^ r 'd further injury. The prisoner asked to be let off with a fine;, but the Bench took ;i serious view of his assault and the gaol term was imposed.
