BEER FOR TROOPS
"MUCH MISAPPREHENSION'" "The JsTational Patriotic F'und Board or the provincial councils have nothing to do with the sending of beer t« Egypt," stated the chairman of the; Lnvercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee (Mr W. Grieve), in pointing out at a meeting last week that there appeared to be much misapprehension about the sending of beer to the troops overseas. "It is entirely a private matter between brewery companies and the canteen authorities in Egypt." At the recent conference of provincial council representatives in Wellington Mrs J. Hargest, who had attended as a Southland represen tative, and Mrs Peter Fra&er, wife of the Prime Minister, had been prominent in discussions on the question, said Mir Grieve. Mrs Hargefct, a member of the committee, said that at the conference she had made strong objection to the sending of beer when it took up valuable space on ships that could otherwise be used to send foods, much desired by the troops, such as tinned fruit. She had asked for an investigation to be made into the question.
