THE DOG NUISANCE

Sir, —In the "Beacon" of the 18th inst, the Inspector reported at Monday's meeting of the Borough Council that to date he had registered 136 dogs and there were still .a numf ber to be added to> the list. As the Council accepts the fee? for registration of these dogs, it Is surely only' tight that ,it ' should take the responsibility, through its Inspector, that dffgs. are kept in such a jteiey are not a nuisance. ""i | I have liveid in many towns, some much larger, and some smaller thai* Whakatane, but nowhere have I ha 3 to put up with the constant barking, both day and night, of such a multitude of the pests—which is a mild name for them when one considers the loss of sleep and irritation of the netrves caused by this uncontrolled army. Tlieir owners make no effort to check them, and I! suggest that the Inspector should take a stroll round Allandalei, Goulstone Road and Kopeopeo and make an example of the wors.t offenders. At present, wer are trying to make a garden, and almost every morning we go out and find dogs of all sizes have been roaming over our sections;. Dogs are prohibited in almost all namping grounds in New Zealand and I think the Whakatane Borough Council could well follow this lead and instruct the Inspector to serve notice on campers that no dogs are to be taken on the camp site in the Domain., Also, owners of dogs who make no effort to keep their socalled pets from being a nuisance, and who have had more than one warning, should be forced to get rid of them. The State Housing Department states clearly that no dogs shall be kept by any tenant of a State house, so the Department clearly realises the nuisknee. I trust the Borough Council will take steps to mitigate this nuisance immediately. Yours: etc., ALLANDALEL
