RACING NOTES

CHANGE OF VENUE Mr P. MoNab, who for many years has acted as caretaker for the Canterbury. Jockey Club, and as started at its race meetings is; relinquishing his position as from June 30. He intends taking up his residence in T'auranga. PROMISING STEEPLECHASER Good reports are to hand from Auckland in regard to the improvement of Dt Grant's Pertinax since his win in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples at the Waikato meeting. It is considered that his owner, who dearly loves a jumper, now has one likely to do well even in good company. By Lord Quex —Galigo, he is a lialf-brotlier to a one time good performer in Hawke's Bay, Luna Lux SPELLING The hurdler, Lapidarian, is out for a long spell, and is. therefore not likely to take port in winter racing. He races weli on a light preparation .so may come to light again in the early spring. A WINTER GUP CANDIDATE Lady Tinkle, who raced unsuccessfully at the Auckland summer fixture, and was allotted a spell, is again in commission. She will make her first appearance at Trentham in July, at>d then continues her preparation for the Winter Cup at Riccarton, a race she won last year. DOUBLE WON FIVE TIMES The Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase double has been won on five occasions. Jn 1895 Liberator was victorious, and iwenty years later El Gallo accomplished the great feat, and in 191(5 registered a repetition. In 1920 the Dunedjn entrant, Lochella was the hero, and in 1925 the Masterton owned Sir was the double winner. H. RAMA AT TRENTHAM Gonseojuent upon ill-health 11. Rama, the well known Auckland sportsman, but now of Trentham, has placed the two latest additions to his team in charge of W. A. Wheeler. They are Taone Pong-i and Tc Poroho, both of which give promise of being gallopers of note. TOP PRICE FOR BATTLE SONG At a dispersal sale of the late Mr S. A. Kain's thoroughbred stock at Canterbury the imported sire Battle Song realised 3000 being 300 guineas more than ihc amount paid for Beau Pere at Wanganui, the purchasers being the Austin Stud Company of Kaiapoi. Battle Song is by Spion Kop, a descendant of the great Carbine, and it is interesting to note that ihc Musket blood is still regarded so highly that top prices are ever recorded for horses of this line. It is right in the interests of the Mew Zealand turf that the Dominion should possess sterling performers from England bred on undoubted staying lines, and under this heading Battle Song is a very fine representative of the great Musket line. THE MONARCH'S WINNING WAY In his last 16 starts The Monarch has won five times and has never been further back than fourth. As a result of the manner in which he shapes in a race, The Monarch' is regarded as a stayer. He was got by Croupier—Kiltruda, by Kilbroney— Atruda, by Joculator—Ermengarde, by Charlemagne II —Watershoot, bv Royal Artillery—Ncmphar, by Apremont. TRACK WORK AS A GUIDE The week before the Great Northern meeting the Auckland sprinter, Llandaff, sprinted half a mile with the poles' 10ft out in the brilliant time of -38 4-5 seconds. He started in the Members' Handicap on the King's Birthday, and was never sighted. Some of his backers arf wondering whether track work can alwaj's be taken as a guide to galloping capability.
