RIVER RISING FAST FLOODING TROUBLES EXPECTED Starting yesterday morning steady rain fell throughout the day to becomc heavier and steadier during last night and at the time of going to * press an exceptionally heavy downpour had eased only slightly. The WhaH katane river at that time was threatening to break its banks and was rising fast. Although no serious dislocations of communications have yet been reported engineers state that they expect trouble and were early 'this morning engaged in inspection tours. Tha downpour at about 8 a.m. this morning coincided with what was practically a spring tide and thus the river rose extremely high and at 9 a.m. was practically encroaching on the Station Road. Easier at Edgecumbe. Figures of the amount of fall at Wliakatane are not yet available, but will be considerable as since l 9 a.m. yesterday at Edgecumbe 1.17 inches were recorded and Mr Alex McLean, the observer, states that they had not nearly the rain reported from Whakatane.
