WOMEN'S INSTITUTE A "TALENT" COMPETITION A SPLENDID SUCCESS Recently the Eastern 13ay of Plenty Federation had the pleasure of handing a donation of £28 5s to the National Patriotic Fund, being money raised by eleven Institutes in a competition, A beautiful silver bowl has been presented for competition among the Institutes of the Federation and the Executive Committee decided to hold a "Talent" competition for Patriotic purposes, the fund to benefit to lie decided at the Annual Council meeting. Eafch Institute was given 2s from Federation funds', this amount to be distributed among members who had to make and sell something. "No raffles" was the only rule. The proceeds were used ever and over again and at the end of the year the total amount made was sent to the Federation secretary. The money was raised in various ways. Some mcambers making cakes and sweets!, while others sewed, knitted or grew seedlings. The winning Institute (Matata, 17 members), whose 2s became £7 7s, also had the highest individual score (£3 3s). This member made cakes and sweets and sold the latter at the football grounds. It was decided that this year the Bowl bei again competed for in a "Talent'* Competition. MATATA MEETING The meeting of the Matata Women's Institute was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Thursday, May 22, Mrs Magee presided over a good attendance. A very interesting and instructive demonstration in basket making was given by Miss Dive. Competition results: Best flower, Mrs Ansell 1, Mrs H. Withy 2. Scones, Mrs H. Withy 1, Mrs H. Burt 2. Two new members were enrolled. Afternoon tea was served by hte hostesses, Mrs Ansell and Mrs Burt. WOMEN'S AUXILIARY DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETS The monthly meeting of the District Committee of tlie W.W.S.A. was held last week when the folloAVing sub-centres Ave re represented : Whakatane, Taneatua, Edgecumbe, Matata and Te Teko, all of which reported good progress in the various activities. In some centres route marches have been held, Whakatane had its first route march on Saturday, May 31. Leaving the High School at tAvo o'clock, the company proceeded to Whakatane Bridge then on by Carter's Road to Tanoatua Road back to school. A halt was made at Mr Howat's farm, Avher.e afternoon tea Avas dispensed by the canteen corps. InvvicA r of several womon on farms being reluctant to join up with the auxiliary as they fear in a case of emergency they could be sent anyAvhere in New Zealand when they Avo-uld be needed at home, the folloAving information has been received from Wellington: In ail eases of emergency, the District Committees in the various districts would haA'e the allocation of the women poAA-er in their own respective districts. For instance it' the E.P.S. required a number of women te Avork for them (for instance the Cycle Corps) then that particular unit is. seconded to the E.P.S. and Avould come directly under its control. An appeal Avas received for doner.'; for l.'ood transfusions should necessity arise. WEDDING BELLS KING—HOGG A pretty Avedding Avas solemnised in the Knox Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Majr 24, AA'hen Elina Margaret, second daughter of the Rev. and Mrs; H. Hogg, of Whakatane, Avas married to Arthur William, only son of the late Mr and Mrs A. Leonard King, of LaAvrence. The officiating ministers Avere the Rev. J. G. Laughton and Rev. I. H. Starnes. Miss L. I. Hobin presided at the organ. The church Avas tastefully decorated in gold and Avhite by the Bible Class Girls Owing to the illness of her father, the bride Avas giA'en aAvay by her brother-in-]a\A r , Mr Ross Murray. She looked charming in a goAvn of ivory satin, complete AA'ith train and v.eil, the latter being held in place ■AA'ith a coronet of orange blossom. She. carried a sheaf bouquet and Avas attended by her sister, Alison, AAdio Avore a dainty frock of primrose taffeta, and carried a sheaf bouquet of blue and gold. Mr Elliot Hogg acted as best ma?). A reception AA'as. held at the Manse where the bride's mother, assisted by Mrs E. A. Hogg, received the guests. Mr and Mrs King later left by car for the North. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MAY MEETING HELD ADDRESS BY MRS FLETCHERCOLE The monthly meeting of the League, of Mothers AA'as held in Knox Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs W. Sullivan presided over a good attendance of members and friends. The day Avas a gift day of the Sunshine Circle, the gifts being donated to the local hospital. After the usual business Avas disposed of Mrs Fletcher Cole gave a most interesting address on Tonga. The) country, its climate, government and great beauty AA r erc A-ery ably described by Mrs Cole, a\ t lio then gave a most inteersting and amusing account of her . sojourn there. The native population, their religion, customs and crafts AA T ere most interesting, as also AA r as her description of the regal Queen Salotte. For heir address Mrs Cole Avas Avarmly applauded and thanked. Hrs Craddoclt delighted the audience with two pianoforte solos, after Avhich afternoon tea Avas dispensed .by tAA T o members of tho committee. The meeting closed Avith the National Anthem. LYCEUM CLUB SOCIAL AFTERNOON Tho usual monthly social afternoon Avas held last Thursday in the Club rooms. A play called "TheMaster Key" AA'as performed by tho following ladies : Mrs Littlejohn, Mrs Spelice, Mrs Cole, Mrs Thomas, Mrs Lucas and Mrs Pearse. Mrs Luxton delighted the audience by singing two songs. For this she was accompanied by Mrs E. Armstrong. A musical competition Avas won by Mrs N., Carter (Taneatua) .
