THEFT CHARGE
MAORI STEALS PIG
SENTENCED TO GAOL
Appearing before Messrs J. G. Mulholland and G. A, Brabant, J's.P. at the local court on Friday, Kelly Ringi Teliana, a young native, was charged with having stolen a pig valued at £3, the property of J. L. Penny. Sergeant M. Farrell stated that the accused who pleaded guilty, was a farm hand employed at Awakeri. Pigs from the neighbouring property! had a habit of straying on his employer's farm and Teliana had chased and knifed one unknown to his employer and taken the carcase to relatives at Te Teko where it was eaten. Sergeant Farrell stated that the accused had since made restitution, but was at present on licence from the Invercargill Borstal. He had served two terms at Borstal both o( two years. Tehana was sentenced to one month at tli3 Whakatane Police Gaol.
