LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION'
HOW MOUNT EDGECUMBE GOT ITS NAME' j I had two replies to this but one only was right. Here is the correct answer. "On November 2, 1769, Captain James Cook who was sailing off the coast in the famous little ship 'Endeavour' entered in his log On the mainland seemingly at no great distance from the sea is a high round mountain, which I have called Mount Edgecumbe ! Ve.ry soon the BEACON will be printing a full :ieeount of Mount Edgecumbe's history, and then you can all read it. The free ticket goes to Sylvia Sims vi'hose answer reads:—■ Mt. Edgecumbe. was named by Captain Cook. Why he named it that is not quite known. The general opinion is that he named it after John Edgecumbe a Sgt. of Marines who was on board the Endeavour at that time. But as John Edgecumbe was a non-commissioned officer some think it was not that because places were notn amed after people of low rank. Another suggestion is that it was named after Mt. Edgecumbe near Plymouth in the South of England. Congratulations stewardess Sylvia, your free picture ticket awaits yon at the office. The other answer was from Barbara Wallace who thought that the mountain was called after
a Waikatp surveyor. Wrong this time Linen Stewardess, but don't get disheartened, better to have a try at it, than not to try at all. Your old friend Peter the Whaler.
