NOVEL "BEAUTY CONTEST"

A report received recently by the National Patriotic Fund Board from its overseas' commissioner, Lieuten-ant-Colonial F Waite, gives an idea i i the steps taken to relieve the monotony of the voyage for the New Zealand troops when they were! transferred from the United Kingdom to the Middle East. A boxing tournament was held, Various other competitions, and at a port of call cricket matches, tennis, bowls and golf were arranged, nnd were taken advantage of bv large, number of the contingent. Entertainment was provided each evening and there were lecturei and travel talks each week, as well ns general knowledge competitions. Colonel Waite makes special mention of an unusual beauty conte«' which was prompted aboard the ship in which he travelled. The object? of tliis notable contest were to determine the hairiest chest, the best suntan, the heaviest and lightest 'oldiers, the tallest and shortest, th« best tattooed, the toughest-looking, the largest girth -measurement' and the best fancy dress. Colonel Waite does not give the names of those who Avere awarded the prizes, for these distinctions, bul says that a good afternoon's fun was had. which was all the more appropriate as theyi crossed the 'line" that night.
