MR J. LAWN AT OHOPE
MEETING OF RATEPAYERS
[ To a somewhat limited meeting of ratepayers. Mr J. Lawn who contested the seat for- the Taneatna riding on the County Council, against the sitting member, Mr H. C. McCready y addressed his policy remarks at Ghope - last Thursday evening. Mr T. P. Dowl'ing presided, and the candidate was introduced by Mr Moody,, who stated that though not 60 well known at Ghope, was; well known and highly respected at Taneatua r where he had been a most successful farmer for the past eight years. Mr Lawn said he did not intend to present a hard and fast as it was often impossible to carry out undertakings which might be made in the best of good faith. However he would endeavour to carryout his duties to those he represented to the best of his ability. He favoured,, he said, the construction of subsidised houses foe. married men on farms, in view of the impossibility of obtaining single: men for farm work. With regard! to financial matters he said that during the war, all unnecessary expense should be avoided and the 1 most careful scrutiny given to all maintenance and. other necessary work. If returned he would advocate the creation of a good working commit.tee representative of the Ghope residents, with which, he could keep in touch and study all' matters in connection with the progress of the settlementAfter answexing a number of questions, Mr Lawn was accorded! a hearty vote of thanks.
