WHAREMANEA SOLD The hurdler, Wharcmanea, by Lucullus, who won at Avondale recently,, has been purchased by the Hon. Elliott Davis. He is to remain in charge of W. J. McLean at E.l- - Wharemanea, now ten years old, had five years out in the paddock, and as a jumper' may be on the scen« until he is quite a good age./ A QUICK RECOVERY , Last week the successful hurdler, Rarotonga, tapped a hurdle, unseated his rider, careered off the Ellerslie course, and on a tar-sealed road fell and sustained bruises and skin abrasions. He was carefully attended to,, liniments and ambro cations were brought into use, and three mornings after the escapade Rarotonga was again executing steady track work. His next appearance with the colours up may be at the Waikato meeting on Monday. RIOTOUS VICTORIOUS At the Te Rapa,, Te Arolia and Paeroa meetings recently the steeple chaser, Riotous, competed in hurdle events unsuccessfully. Many keen judges while acknowledging his forward racing condition, and splendid jumping capability were of the opinion that when the time arrived for cross-country contests, the Birkdale representative would be very prominent. They assessed matters correctly for on Thursday lie triumphed in great style in the Hawera Steeplechase. He led from start to finish and treated onlookers to a splendid exhibition of jumping the big obstacles. THE LEADING STEEPLECHASER New Zealand's leading steeplechaser, Clarion Call, broke down at Awapuni Avhile being prepared for the Waverlcy Steeplechase. It is not expected that he will l carry the colours during the winter of 1941. A MATTER OF FITNESS Trainer Ji. T. Jamieson,, of Sydney, now at Cambridge on a brief holiday, has a great opinion of the capabilities of the three. New Zealand bred horses,, High Caste, Beau Vite and Beaulivre. He said that 'Vhcn they oppose each other success is usually with the one that is at the highest peak of fitness*'*
