RACING NOTES
THE TWO YEAR OLDS Two year oid form showed a lack of consistency at Pukekohe. Among the contestants were Balblair, Avlio won at Avondalc last-month; Bright Lady, a winner at Paeroa in March; Opuatia, who scored a ayin earlier In the season and Regal Fox, a recent victor, but nevertheless, in a field of 16 the practically unknown /osette Avon from another maiden performer in Dependable. A very big dividend was paid out on the winner's number, as the investing public again preferred to follow form. To a great extent this is a sound policy, but not this season in respect to lavo year old racing. STRIKING FORM The Foxbridge filly,. Foxola, who during the spring won five races in succession!, has just recently been taken up again after a lengthy spell. She is apparently coming, to hand quickly, for at Pukekohe she ran a very close second to Marshall, Hall in the Paerata Handicap in a field,-of 1(> speedy sprinters. It should not be long before one of the district racing judges, is called upon to hoist her number on the board. MORE THOROUGHBREDS Mr Ralph SteAA-art, of Wellington, OAVner of Beau Vite, is evidently an enthusiast in the racing game. He has lately put into Avork a Phaleron Bay—Martial Lady filly that he purchased for 600 guineas at the National Sales, and a BuLaiidshar—Countersign c.olt that is expected to furnish into a front rank performer. WAIKATO ENTRANTS Included in the nominations for the Waikato Racing Club's meeting are no less than 38 candidates from the south, from as far distant a s Timaru and Riccarton. As the majority may be accepted for the inclusion of the visitors Avill be an additional attraction to the Avinter meeting. The performances of the southerners Avill doubtless be keenI Ij" scanned in view of the Great Northern meeting a fortnight later. DEFINITELY IMPROVING In the President's Handicap at Pukekohe the Matamata owned and trained The Cardinal, Avas one of the outsiders. In point of appearance he could be termed "Not quite ready" but that he' is improving fast ay as shoAvn by his determined finish in third place. This Night Raid—Palestrina representative, iioav a five year old, has be,en handicapped for the past tAVo seasions by unsoundness Avhich at least precluded him from doiing his best on hard tracks. He to have been treated successfully for his ailment, and noAV tho ground has lost its sting for a fcAV months The Cardinal may yet race up l o his. pedigree lines. DISTANCE WILL SUIT Surveyor-General Avas much fancied in certain quarters for the chief event at Waverley, but after being in the lead to the straight he faded out of it. He should be better suited over furlongs'. FAILURE OF TRIO W. Rayneir took Dynasty, Ringchaft and Curtail to Waverley, bui they failed to do any good. Dynasty was never prominent in the Besley Memorial, while Curtail failed to show lip in the HighAA'eight. Ringchaft was in thei lead most of ,the way in the Hack Cup, but then faded out. A GOOD SORT The fact that The Dozer is being schooled over the hurdles at Takanini makes it clear that the gelding will be seen out in that department of the sport during tlie; Avinter season. It Avill be remembered, that at the Franklin meeting this time last year the son of Valette contested the hurdle race: and scored a very comfortable Avin. Since then his efforts haA r e been confined to fiat racing, nut he has raced often, and is a wol.l-,seasoned horse to take the trying journeys required to win jumping races.
