BEETLE BAIT
NAMED BY TROOPS IN EGYPT USE FOR GOLDEN SYRUP Golden sjinip is known as bccitlobait to the Australian troops overseas. This was the way of it:— A soldier in a Comforts Fund store in Egypt asked for a tin foi his vmit. He got two and was told to "keep it dark" The next man asked for two and got four. He also was told to "kecip it dark." Im a few minutes another arrived, panting ftnd asked for four tins. He got eight. They all "kept it dark", and in half an hour the whole stock of golden syrup had gone. The reason for it all leaked oul eventually. While the A.C.F. goods were being unloaded in the adjacent harbour a tin of syrup burst and smeared all the cases beside it. Myriads, of bottles over-ran the store, hut when all the stick}* tinj went so did thoy.
