RACING NOTES

PRIZE MONEY The Wanganui Guineas of 1942 will be worth £500. In the event of a national war emergency or the unforseen circumstances' the club reserves the right to withdraw tihe race or run it under modified conditions. A PROSPECTIVE HURDLER Quadroon, a successful performer on the flat has just been brought in from a lengthy paddock spell. He is regarded as perfectly sound:, and is now to be schooled over the obstacles at Awapuni. BROTHER TO HIGH CASTE The latest addition to R. S. Bagby's team at Ellersl'iei is a rising two year old colt by Bulandshar--Tho Begum, therefore a full brother to High Caste, whose winning to date exceed £30,000. FOR HURDLING Glen Council is now to be put to hurdling", and is being schooled over the obstacles at Te Rapa by J. R. Muir. He was just a little, disappointing on the flat,, but may make good in his new department. DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP The Duke of Gloucester Cup is to be run at Timaru this month. More than the usual interest is being taken in the event, for last week the Canterbury Jockey Club issued no less than 18 gentlemen rider's licenses. GOOD FOR HIS AGE The Raceful gelding, King Rey, now rising 13 years of age, must still be regarded as a good, racing proposition for his owner, Mr N. Grafas, of Te Pukei,, is at present considering an offer for his purchase. HOPES FOR NEXT SEASON Owing to unsoundness Orelio could not be raced at Ellerslie during Easter, but hopes are entertained that he may get through a thorough preparation next season. RETIRED FROM THE TURF One of the Dominion's best performers, Royal Chief, has been retired from the turf. During his racing career he has won many important events both in New Zealand and Australia. A WINNING TWO YEAR OLD The Salamagandii colt, Balblair, n winner at Avondiale, was practically sold as a yearling to an Indian buyer, but failed to pass the veterinary surgeon's examination on account of having one short leg. This confirmation handicap means that he will race better on right handed courses than in the opposite direction. In the meantime he must be accounted! a promising gal lope: 1 when he can defeat a field of two-year-olds that have no> faults in their make-up. WILL DO BETTER The Takanini trained Saccone made his reappearance with the colours up when lie 1 competed, in the Onewhero Hurdles at Pukekohe. He was looking big and lusty, but nevertheless not far from his best. In the race he was content to run along in the rear division l ,, but his i jumping was very sound and in the run down the straight he put in a \ery fine finishing dash. He is likely to improve in the next four weeks and may get "in the money" at the' Great Northern fixture. A CUDDLE JUVENILE Just brought in at Trent ham to enter upon the rudiments; ctf his education is the yearling colt by Croupier from the famous mare Cuddle;. He will be trained by T. R. George and on the score of breeding much will be expected of him. even as a two year old. In the months to come it will be interesting to note whether lie is raced lightly or strenuously as a two year old, for it is quite on the cards; thai some owners will have taken a lesson from the lact that the champion three year old Kindergarten could not b"e raced until later in his two year old season consequent upon being affected: with a severe cold in the 1 spring. This colt may have been a blessing in disguise for without it although he may have been a top noteher in juvenile events, lie may not have been out of the ordinary as a three year old.
