Mr L. G. Wood;, who for the past two years was postmaster at Whakatane,, left to take up duty as postmaster at Devonport, Auckland, yesterday. Prior ta leaving he was meit by the staff at the local oifice and made the recipient of a presentation!. Mr L. E, Norriss, on behalf of the staff extended best wishes for the future to Mr-Wood. Until the arrival of Mr O. V. Lattimore en Friday next, Mr Norriss is acting as postmaster. Tlie death occurred on Wednesday night of Sergeant Frank William Johnsen, aged 52, of the police force. Sergeant Johnsen begun his pclice career at Wellington in 1920, serving later at Onehunga, Whakatane and Mangaweka before going to Dunedin in 1935. Se served nearly four years in thei Great War, earning the Military Medal for gallantry. While in Whakatane as a Constable, lie was a very popular officer and a valuable member of athletic bodies, taking a keen interest in all sport. Meifibers of the Whakatane' Chamber of Commerce, and others interested are reminded of the special address which is being delivered by Mr A. G. Lunn of Auckland in the County Council Chambers! to-mor-row evening. Mr Lunn will deal with the aims and objectives of Chambers of Commerce, and as a past president of both Chamber and the AssocS|iaClhambers of Commerce of he is particularly qualified in, this respect. It is to bei hoped that the meeting .will be a reipresentative one indicating Whakatane's appreciation of Mr Lunn's gesture.
