GIANT OF BALKANS IS DEAD Nicolai Titulescu, once Foreign Minister of Rumania, has died at Cannes, He Avas pro-French and pro-Rus-sian. Carol kicked him out of office Avhile he was 111 and in France on a holiday. From that day Rumania started her slide towards the Nazi abyss. Titulescu in his time had so much influence that rumours of attempts to murder him Avcre frequent. A circumstantial story of sloav' poisoning once interested all Europe. "He looks like a mongoloid monkey; . . . his wit and unquenchable A'ivaeitv are famous ._. „; he Avears an indoors, even on the hottest day . . . ; he lias twice been president of the League of Nations Assembly, and in 1!)35 Avas president of both the Little Entente and tlie Balkan Entente, comprising populations of almost 70,000,000 people." That is what John Ganther wrote about him in "Inside Europe." Titulescu ha J died too soon to learn the answer to the great Bal- j kan questions.
